Exploring Slovenia was the second half of our Italy–Slovenia adventure. After spending nearly two weeks exploring Rome, Cinque Terre, Venice, and the Dolomites, we drove our rental car from Cortina d’Ampezzo across the border into Bovec – the gateway to Slovenia’s turquoise Soča River and Triglav National Park.

Over the next 6 days, we hiked through lush alpine valleys, chased waterfalls, swam in glacier-blue water, and explored charming towns. Slovenia completely exceeded our expectations! It’s affordable, peaceful, and overflowing with natural beauty. For couples who love adventure and comfort without overspending, this destination is a dream.

Things to Know

  • Best Time to Visit: Late May–September for hiking, swimming, and warm weather.
    • Late June was warm, 80 degrees most day and Soca river for swimming was refreshing.
  • Language: Slovenian, but many people spoke some English.
    • We had no problem at all, a few times had to use a translate app but majority spoke some english.
  • Currency: Euro. Tap-to-pay and cards worked almost everywhere.
    • We had 200 euros in cash to use when needed but everywhere accepted card (Not AMEX).
  • Transportation: A rental car is essential for exploring Slovenia. Public transportation is limited and not efficient.
    • Our rental car was about 80 euros a day, it was a hybrid so efficient on gas.
    • It was very easy to drive in Slovenia.
  • Safety & LGBTQ+ Friendliness: We felt safe and fully comfortable everywhere we went. Locals were friendly and welcoming.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 – Drive from Cortina (Italy) to Bovec, Slovenia

  • We checked out of our hotel in Cortina and began our scenic drive toward Bovec, Slovenia – about 3.5 hours through the mountains.
  • Important: Before crossing the border into Slovenia, you must purchase and register a highway vignette (toll pass) for your rental car. You can get one online at si-vignette.com for €15–20 for a 7-day pass. If you drive without one, you can be fined several hundred euros.
  • The drive itself was beautiful, winding through mountain passes and small alpine towns. We checked into Hotel Mangart – booked via Hotels.com (€506 for 3 nights). The hotel was clean, comfortable, and in a perfect location with easy access to trails and restaurants.
  • We spent the evening relaxing, walking around town and had dinner at Bovec Kitchen. This was one of our favorite meals our whole trip! So fresh and delicious. It is a family run food stand, must go!

Day 2 – Bovec & the Soča River Adventure

  • Started with our hotel’s amazing buffet breakfast.
  • Then headed out to explore:
    • Stop #1: Virje Waterfall (Slap Virje) – 10 min from Bovec, easy 10-min walk down. A fairy-tale waterfall surrounded by mossy rocks, peaceful place.
    • Stop #2: Boka Waterfall Viewpoint – Slovenia’s tallest waterfall (144 m drop). Beautiful, but honestly we did not think it was worth our time.
    • Stop #3: Soča River Road to Great Soča Gorge – Scenic drive through Trenta Valley Road inside Triglav National Park. Stop at suspension bridges and viewpoints along the way.
    • Stop #4: Great Soča Gorge (Velika Korita Soče) – Easy 20-min trail along turquoise water. Bring a swimsuit, this is one of the most beautiful places to swim.
    • Stop #5: Šunik Water Grove – 15 min away in Lepena Valley. Peaceful 30–40 min forest loop with mossy cascades and wooden bridges, beautiful and easy hike.
  • We ended the day back at Bovec Kitchen for dinner, lamb patties and grilled trout again (10/10)!

Day 3 – Kobarid & Kanal ob Soči

  • We originally planned to go canyoning today, but Cori sprained her ankle very bad on our last hike in the Dolomites so we had to cancel and find something less physical.
  • Instead, we do a little road trip to see a few things:
    • Stop #1: Napoleon Bridge (Kobarid) – historic stone bridge with stunning Soča River views.
    • Stop #2: Kozjak Waterfall (Slap Kozjak) – 30–45 min easy hike to a hidden waterfall inside a mossy cave. Small entrance fee (~€5) and absolutely worth it.
    • Stop 3: Kanal ob Soči – colorful riverside town with stone bridges and charm.
      • Lunch at Fontana Kanal Ob Soči — lamb ribs & Caesar salad were so good.
      • Swam with lots of locals in the river under the bridge. There is free public parking lots, you will see blue signs in the town with a P.
    • Returned to Bovec for a relaxed evening.

Day 4 – Bovec to Lake Bled to Ljubljana

  • We debated staying in Lake Bled, but after doing research and saw how expensive it is, we decided to spend the day there, on our way to Ljubljana.
  • After breakfast at the hotel, we left Bovec around 10:00 AM for Lake Bled (about 2.5 hours).
  • Arrived around noon. Every where around the lake had paid parking (from 2-5 euros per hour.
  • We hiked Ojstrica Trail, for postcard-perfect views of the lake and island. You can hike up to the view point and hike back the way you came for a short 2-miles, or you can do the roundtrip loop for another half mile or so. Highly recommend doing the whole loop (lots of good views, plus there are stairs down the back side, much easier than the steep dirt trail down).
  • Then we went for a swim at the lake, Cori swam out to the island (the water was 79°F and amazing).
  • We had planned to eat at the Lake Bled Castle (if you eat there you get into the museum free) but it was closed. We wished we could have done this! Make a reservation ahead of time.
  • The left Lake Bled and drove to Ljubljana, about 45 minutes away.
  • Checked into Occidental Ljubljana (€115 per night) — modern hotel, great location, but breakfast was pricey (€18/person) so we skipped it.
  • Ended the night with gelato for dinner at Vigò — incredible, one of our favorites our whole trip!

Day 5 – Ljubljana & Škocjan Caves

  • Breakfast at Ljubljana Market (~€14 total for coffee, juice, and snacks).
    • Great hack! Local markets/grocery stores have pre-made sandwiches and pastries you can take to-go for a great price.
  • Drove about 1 hour to Škocjan Caves — one of Europe’s largest underground canyons. The tour lasts 1.5 hours and costs €33/person. It was surreal walking over bridges above a roaring river deep inside the earth. Then you can hike out which takes another hour.
  • Back in Ljubljana, we toured Ljubljana Castle (€15/person) for panoramic city views.
  • Dinner at POP’s Aperitivo — beef ribs and Slovenian dumplings (€44 total). Delicious but a bit of a splurge.

Day 6 – Travel Day

Overall Top Recommendations

  • We grabbed market sandwiches and protein shakes for breakfast (€8 total) before the 2-hour drive to Venice for our flight home to Seattle.
  • Goodbyes are always bittersweet, but Slovenia truly surprised us – peaceful, friendly, and endlessly scenic.

  2. Kozjak Waterfall Hike — short, magical trail leading to a hidden cave waterfall.
  3. Škocjan Caves Tour — one of Europe’s most underrated adventures.
    • We know canyoneering would have been on this list, we talked to people who did it and they all loved it! Sad we missed it, we will have to do it next time.

Top 3 Meals

  1. Bovec Kitchen – fresh trout and lamb patties, friendly staff, local wine.
  2. Fontana Kanal ob Soči – best riverside meal of the trip.
  3. Vigò (Ljubljana) – best gelato!
